SAC Success in Bexhill

February10/ 2013

Saturday 9th February 2013 saw five hardy Steyning athletes lining up for the Sussex Masters Cross-Country Championships race in Bexhill. We had a Ladies team in the V35 race (Camilla Neale, Jo Hesketh and Ruth Saunders), Joan Lennon was representing the V55 ladies and Malcolm Hales raced for the V60 men. It was a COLD damp day but luckily Bexhill hadn’t yet got the rain/sleet which was moving steadily across Sussex.  The Ladies were first off on a 3-and-a-bit laps course, and Camilla got a cracking start and actually led for most of the race, staying ahead of her usual rivals. Jo, Ruth and Jo struggled along in her wake, grinding up the hills, struggling to stay upright in the deep sloppy mud in the woods, and on the waterlogged flat grassy section at the bottom of the course.

Camilla was overtaken on the last lap by Fay Cripps of Chichester who then held onto the lead to the finish. Camilla came in second in a time of 27m 57s with Jo in 13th place (30m 34s) and Ruth in 20th in 32m 23s for category V35. This gave the V35 Steyning ladies team the Silver Medal.  Joan ended up winning the V55 title, Gold medal, with her time of 31m 50 seconds.

In the Men’s race, the V40 and V50 men had to run 5 big laps of the course but a last minute change of heart by the organisers allowed the V60 men to ‘just’ do 4 laps. So Malcolm did his 4 laps, the sole Steyning runner, and finished in 14th position (40m 54s).

It was a good day out in Bexhill with typical challenging cross-country conditions. There is only one more Cross-country race in the series this season in West Sussex – at Lancing Manor on 2nd March (rescheduled from mid-February). Let’s hope for a good Club turnout to finish off the season in style. If you want to race, please contact Camilla for details. You can enter that race on the day.
