For those of you that didn’t attend the AGM on Monday, Please see below the Captains report I gave at the meeting for the Junior section at the club.  If you would like more information please contact Liz Claridge.

What a great year it’s been or the junior section at Steyning.

At the AGM last year I said that juniors would be 1st in the West Sussex Fun Run League – they were (results still to be confirmed – but we won by a mile!)  I think I also said that they should aim for most improved club as well – they were!  I probably said I’d win the lottery as well – I didn’t!

There were a number of Brillant performances at the Brighton Marathon mini mile races – Our best results were Finn Halloren beating over 200 runners to be first in the under 11 Boys race. There were 2 fourth places for Niamh Halloren and Zara Smith, and a fifth place for Bethany Smith in the Under 11’s races – each of these races had over 200 competitors in!

The children took part in Olympic theamed events throughout the year – Olympic Challenge – can you complete a Marathon before the start of the Olympics and Paralympic games such as blind football.

The London 2012 Olympics and summer of sport has inspired many of our members.   We are no longer just a running and walking club for children!

The coaching team have listened to the childrens needs and are adapting fast to deliver a UKA development programme specificaly for childdren that develops the fundamentals of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination (the ABC’s) it also focuses on the technical skills needed for running, jumping and throwing. Through this programme England Athletics believe young people will develop the skills and confidence to excel in life, not only in athletics, but in other sports and other life pursuits – which can’t be a bad thing.

The junior section at Steyning is unique, I’ve met a number of coaches this year (not just athletic coaches) and can confirm that our club provides the lowest ‘pay as you go’ training night fee and annual membership. Many of the clubs I’ve spoken to charge between £30 – £40 per term. We are very proud to provide these sessions at such low costs for the local community but this can only continue if we have help from adult members from within the club. Our current coaching team consists of 5 coaches, 3 full time parent helpers and 1 ‘young adult’ helper. We have a waiting list of approx 30 and rising weekly.

Looking forward to 2013…

We’ve been invited to join the Worthing Sports Hall competition – which starts in December. This is a track and field competition but it’s held indoors! My personal goal is for Steyning to beat Lewes AC – I work with their coach and this will prove to him that the coaches at Steyning are better than theirs!  We would also like to attend Quad kids competitions – track and field events outside in the summer months.  Aim for 20+ juniors to take part in the Brighton Marathon mini mile races and of course aim to maintain 1st place in the West Sussex Fun Run League.
