2014 Club Running Competitions

December17/ 2013

For the upcoming year the running section will be organising two club competitions running in parallel throughout the season. The first will be a slightly revised handicap competition and the second will be a club running championship. Both competitions will be based around the west sussex fun run league events with the possibility of adding some club only events through the summer (More on these later in the year). There are seventeen confirmed WSFRL events for 2014. Hove Hornets have joined the league for next season and they may host an additional event towards the end of the year. Any club member just needs to enter seven of the qualifying events to be in with a chance of winning one of the magnificent trophies at the end of the year. The format for these competitions can be found at the bottom of this post.

This year as a club we are aiming to get back to a level where we are competing to win the WSFRL. In order to achieve this we need to have a minimum of 25 competitors at each event, including a good few of the club’s top runners.

The first event is on Jan 1st. This is the Hangover Five WSFRL race starting from the Hill Barn playing fields in Worthing and heading up and around the downs to the north. A perfect hangover cure! In order to take advantage of the reduced entry fee for WSFRL member clubs (still a bargain £2 per race for next year), all you need to do is e-mail me before Friday 27th Dec. Alternatively you can book a place with myself or Lisa at either the Thursday or Tuesday training sessions. If we are going to get back to the top of the WSFRL we need a good start so I am expecting a rush of responses!

I know that many runners will be training for longer distance spring events between now and April. Many of you may want to incorporate a local WSFRL event as part of a long run by running either to or back from the event. I am happy to coordinate arranging lifts for anyone not running both ways. To that end, if you will be driving to the event and have a spare space in the car, or need a lift to or from an event then please let me know when you book a place.

Entries for the WSFRL events will still be available on the day but can cost up to £5. If you are planning to come along on the day please check with if there are any spare numbers available when you arrive. If anyone who has booked in is not able to run for whatever reason then please try to let someone know so that we can reallocate your number.

Have a great Xmas everyone

    Handicap Competition Format.

1) Any Steyning AC member who has taken part in a total of three WSFRL races during 2012 or 2013 will have a handicap and can score points for all subsequent events.

2) Each handicap is generated from the times for the last three events and will be continuously updated throughout the year following each event.

3) The handicap for the next event is calculated by converting the time from the previous three events into a pace value(min/mile). The average pace across all three events is then used to generate each runners predicted pace/time for the next event.

4) New runners will be allocated a provisional handicap following their first event based on their pace for that event. They will then be eligible to score points from event two onwards. The handicap for subsequent events will then be based upon average pace for two and then three events.

5) Points are then awarded by comparing actual times with predicted times.

6) The competitor who tops the handicap for an event is awarded 1 point down to a maximum of 25.

7) The total points for a competitor at the end of the year will be the sum of their best seven scores.

8) Competitors will be ranked by the number of events entered (up to a maximum of seven) and then their points total.

8) If the number of events and total points are both equal, then the next best score(s) will be compared to determine the points table order.

    Club Championship Competition Format.

1) Any Steyning AC member who has takes part in a WSFRL event will be allocated the points scored using the WSFRL points scoring system in the SAC Club Championship (Top 10% finishers get 10 points, next 10% 9 points and so on. Refer to WSFRL website for more details).

2) There will be a separte Mens and Ladies competition

3) Any club organised events included will use an identical scoring system

4) The total points for a competitor at the end of the year will be the sum of their best seven scores.

5) Competitors will be ranked by the number of events entered (up to a maximum of seven) and then their points total.

6) If the number of events and total points are both equal, then the next best score(s) will be compared to determine the points table order.
