Dear All

Those of you who ran the Roundhill Romp might have wondered where Ewan Dunlop was. Ewan is one of our quickest runners and runs most of the West Sussex Fun Run League races……. Well, he had a pretty good excuse for not running – the weekend before he ran a 100m-mile off-road race……. Yes – you read that correctly – Ewan ran a 100-mile race! The fearsome South Downs Way 100 Ultra-marathon.

Ewan has run a lot of ultra-marathons (anything over marathon-distance), but this was his first 100-miler. He came 12th out of 117, which was a fantastic achievement.

Here is his description of the race:

“The race started at 6am in Winchester on Saturday morning with 200 competitors aiming to reach Eastbourne 100 miles later along the South Downs Way within the 30 hour time limit. It started off fairly wet the majority of the race was spent in ideal conditions. Although not my first ultra, this was my first 100 miler, my goal was simply to finish and if i could get close to the coveted 24 hour mark that would be a bonus.

After starting off at a steady pace I passed through Washington at mile 54 in just under 10 hours. I was over the moon with my progress but the pain was starting to kick in and from then on it was just a matter of grinning and bearing.
I hit mile 75 as night fell in and my pacer Graham joined me for the last stretch to help navigate and give encouragement. We reached Eastbourne and entered the finish at Eastbourne athletics track at 3:30 am Sunday meaning I’d completed the race in 21 hours and 33 minutes, surpassing all my expectations. I also managed to finish in 12th place out of the 117 that managed to complete the course.
In Ultramarathons it’s also tradition to receive a belt buckle for completing a 100 mile race in under 24 hours, so I’m now the proud owner of my first buckle.
I wasn’t able to walk again properly until yesterday but will be running again at the Wobble on Sunday.”

I  am just in awe of this achievement. Wow! Well done Ewan!

Happy running,
Daniel
