Steyning Stinger 2017

Last Sunday, with the help of club members and volunteers from outside the club, Steyning AC hosted a very successful Steyning Stinger Marathon and Half Marathon for the 16th year.

The weather conditions first thing were challenging to say the least but we managed to get the event underway on time and thankfully the conditions then improved dramatically.

Overall we had a record number of entries this year and served the most post race breakfasts in the event’s history.  Even given the testing conditions some of the times posted were exceptional. Jon Pepper (Brighton Phoenix AC) completed the Marathon course just four minutes outside the course record.

On behalf of the organising committee and the club a massive thank you to everyone who helped to make Sunday’s event a great success once again.

Included below is some of the fantastic feedback we have received so far.    Well done everyone.

Competitor Feedback

“Firstly, thank you again to everyone involved yesterday – this is without a doubt my favourite event of the running calendar.

I ran the half last year and decided to run the full this year and loved it.

  • Flexible start times is such a good idea and works brilliantly.
  • For someone who has a terrible sense of direction, there was next to no chance of getting lost as marshal points and course arrows were positioned really well. Direction signs to the car park from the A283 were great too.
  • Really straight forward picking up race number.
  • Luggage area was really well organised.
  • All of the marshals were just awesome, particularly given the brutal weather conditions. The two guys out at the turn point at Steepdown provided a much needed laugh, it was chucking it down and really windy at that point – they asked me if I fancied anything from the BBQ :)
  • Nice to have use of the leisure centre showers.
  • Great breakfast.
  • Cool medal.

Can you tell I love this event?? I honestly can’t think of any improvement suggestions.

Will be back next year.”

“Just wanted to say thanks to ALL concerned for today.

As I said to those of you in the tent at the finish line – that was……memorable :-).

See you next year!”

“Just wanted to say thank you for an awesome event – my first time running the event I did the Half. I run with Burgess Hill Runners!”

“Just loved it – the mud, the views, the bling and the breaky oh and the aid stations with Mars and biscuits! Just what the doc ordered..”

“Many thanks again for a faultless event the variable weather made tolerable by cheerful marshals and great facilities at the end”

“Thanks so much for running such an amazing event, found it a massive challenge, but was over the moon to get round in one piece. Loved the breakfast at the finish, such a nice touch and the marshals did a fantastic job in those conditions.”

“Thank you very much.  This was my first experience of the Steyning Stinger Half Marathon, and I enjoyed it immensely.  I hope to run with you again next year.”

“Thanks for another great event. The Stinger is one of my absolute favourites and I’ll be back next year for another trundle. As for feedback, just keep doing what you’re doing. I really liked the new finish (it’s now nearly as good as the old route down Wiston Bostal).”

“Thank you for your efforts organising this year’s race. As you say, conditions were challenging, but the support from the marshals and all your team was brilliant.”

“Thanks so much for yesterday guys, what a brilliantly organised and run event in such bad conditions. Hats off!”

“I would just like to say what a fantastic time I had today at the stinger, I’ve never done an official cross country race before and I was so impressed with the organisation.  The marshalling was fantastic, happy people despite the awful weather, everyone was so helpful and friendly.  At the end it was all the little things that made such a difference, plastic bags for the muddy shoes a great breakfast and showers!!  Will definitely recommend the race to others,
Despite the fact I don’t think I’ll be able to walk for a few days.”

“Many thanks for putting on a great race on Sunday, despite the muddy and rainy conditions I really enjoyed it.”

“On behalf of the six members from Gosport Road Runners who completed the Half Marathon I would just like to say how much we appreciated the excellent organisation of the event with a particular mention for the marshals who remained exposed to some pretty awful weather for such a long time and were so very encouraging to us all.  Between our group we have entered many races over the years and to include a hot breakfast with the entry fee was something we have not experienced before and which was very welcome, enjoyable and appreciated.  The lady on the PA system was great in keeping an efficient flow of service. Would you please pass our thanks to everyone.”

“Just wanted to thank you for a well organised Race .. brilliant and well marshaled, please pass my thanks onto all those marshals who stood in the rain and wind and odd bits of sunshine too.

Top cross country half marathon I will be back next year .”

“I had a great time even with all the rain, wind and hailstones. I would also like to say thank you for the lovely marshals braving the weather all morning too. My final thanks to the young girls serving the breakfast after the race, they were great.
I will definitely be back next year, it will become a tradition.”

“I would just like to say a big thank you to all at Steyning AC Stinger team.

I have run many full and half marathons but this was my first Stinger .

I thought the event from arrival and car parking to registration right through to the finish and breakfast, was brilliant.

I think the weather added to the enjoyment of the day.

I will be looking at your web site in early November for 2018 race.

Once again a big well done and thank you.”

“I just wanted to say a very BIG thank you to everyone that put together such a fantastic event on Sunday especially the marshals despite the horrible weather conditions.

I will be writing up a race review for our next club newsletter and hopefully we can get more of our club members to take part in this event next year.  I know from my own personal post on facebook with photos from the day along with the lovely medal many have ear marked this event for next year.

Once again well done to all the race team see you all in July for the Romp.”

“Would just like to say a massive THANK YOU  to all who ran the event. As always first class. Best race/event of the year in terms of race venue, course and of course the AMAZING marshalls. Without SAC it obviously would not happen.”

“I just wanted to say a big thank you for the event. As you said the
conditions were a little challenging but that actually made it even
more interesting and enjoyable. As ever the organisation, venue and
catering was excellent but the biggest thank you has to go to all those
marshals out on the course who braved the very worst of the weather for
several hours and still managed to encourage us runners”
