There is Charity Fundraising Evening at the SAC clubhouse on Sunday 13th May at 7.30pm. Please see attached poster for details.

Tickets are available from Angela on 07747 840738 or from Steyning Bookshop.

The sunday after the clocks went back we held the first of the summer multi-sport series events. The course was a full 5k run to start,  two laps of the bypass on the bike (12k) and then 2k over the traditional 1 km loop around leisure centre.

After getting over the initial shock of Lee turning up – not only on time (almost) but stripped down to the bare minimum of a trisuit – the eight competitors set off  in what were pretty cold conditions.

Tom Coates, recently back to fitness, had dusted the cobwebs off his bike only the night before and slightly concerned about the bike section, flew off at a sprint down into Steyning. His efforts were rewarded as he returned in the lead by just over a minute, ahead of Lee in second place and Adrian - another minute behind.  Despite the low profile cycling of Adrian, John and Lee, down on their tribars, Tom, sitting tall, still managed to keep the competition at bay and regained his minute advantage by the end of the race, winning in just under 47 mins (46. 53). Lee remained in second place  (47.59) – showing he can do this ‘multisport thing’ and Adrian, who had closed the gap, 3rd in 48.13.

Adrian can console himself with the fastest bike time (19.31) although John B put in an equally fast performance (19.39) with his newly retired slimline look.  Chris ‘the Headmaster’ wins the award for fastest combined transitions – all important – showing room for improvement among others.

Lydia, Amanda and George all put in solid performances and everyone looked everybit the real duathlete.

Apologies to George for not paying attention and letting him ride into transistion!

Finally, a round of applause for our top class timekeepers  – Barbara, Martin, Jeremy and Sue –  who also rose early to support the event and without whom, we could not provide such comprehensive results!

Full results below. Sorry no photos! Next time…….

Evening Time Trials

One of the best ways to improve your cycling and also learn
about your own self is to take part in the evening 10 time trials.

The evening ten is 30 minutes or less of pure cycling pain. The
beauty of the 10 is you can experiment with different tactics, flat out for the
first 5 miles survive the next 5, steady first 5 as fast as possible last 5 and
so on, and if you blow up you have a maximum of 5 miles to get back.

If you decide to have a go then both of our local clubs,
Brighton Excelsior on Tuesday evenings and Worthing Excelsior on Thursday
evening, run 10’s. Event start times change as the days get longer 6:30pm is
the earliest going out to 7:15pm later in the season.

Brighton uses a
course starting at Hammes Farm on A283 and goes south to Shoreham roundabout
and returns to the finish just south of the road to the sports centre.

To enter you have to
‘’sign-on’’ at Newlands Gardens (health centre) car park off Tanyard Lane.

You will have to pay a small fee, about £3.50p and sign your
name and collect your number, I would suggest getting there at least ½ hr be
start time or even 1 hr before it you want an early start time.

Joan or myself can always get you a number but only if you
are 100% sure you will turn up, you will still need to ‘’sign on’’ and collect
your number.

Your number donates your start time in minutes, after the
event start time. Riders are separated by 1 minute’s intervals.

Unless riding as a team (2up) you are not allowed to follow
any other rider. A time trial is call the race of truth because you have not
where to hide.

This was a team multi sport race, with Shane Bridgman, Simon Turk and Gary Brind representing Steyning AC (only teams of 3 can enter – no solo racers…), where you all have to stay together for the whole event.

The race was at Longmoor Army base and at the start you don’t know the race format but just knew it was a XC 10k run, up to 25km mtb and 1k kayak, then a slippery 8 foot wall at the end. 151 teams started, the format ended up being a 2.5km run, 10km mtb, 5km run, “1km” (it was shorter..) 3 person Kayak, 2.5km run, 10k mtb then to finish a tiny assault course. After the first run and bike, we climbed to 3rd overall, then were in battle with the Armys team and another team, they overtook us on the run, but we pulled them back on the bike. Going into the final leg we were the 2nd ranked male team. Just as we started the dam assault course, there was a really annoying stupid wooden plank task (did not know we had to do it until we got there), where all 3 of us had to walk in sync on 2 pieces of wood. Could we do it fast ? NO, and kept falling over like a 1 year old kid… 2 teams passed us and we eventually came in 4th male team overall.

Had to have a laugh after about this final task, that cost us a really good position, but still had a lot of fun….

PS : If Gary Priddis had not forced Simon Turk and Gary Brind to do the swimming gala during the morning on Saturday and drained our energy levels, we would have won it of course !!! ;o)

Just a reminder that the club has booked the leisure centre swimming pool for an hour every Sunday evening (19.30-20.30). This session is open to all members. Either come and do your own thing, or ask one of the coaches if you want a swim set to work through.

Cost – £3.00 for adults, £2.00 for juniors.
