Steyning Athletic Club was formed in 1951 to accommodate the walkers and other Athletes who at the time actively participated in race-walking and running in the Steyning area. The club has expanded and changed since those early days and now has its own premises in Charlton Street, Steyning, and caters for runners of all ages, triathletes and race walkers.
The Club has over 150 members ranging in age from 7 years to over 70. Our regular training nights are Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00pm at the club and a number of our athletes also meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30am for an early morning run. The triathletes have swimming training in the Steyning pool on Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm, and Saturday mornings at 9:00am and 10:00, which is often followed by a bike ride. We have a good selection of fitness equipment in our Charlton Street clubhouse, including weights, fitballs, medicine balls and training mats and hold a circuit training session every Wednesday evening at 6:00pm in the clubhouse. We have a number of qualified coaches covering all the disciplines supported by the club including race-walking, running , swimming, cycling and circuit training.
STEYNING AC FIRST CLUB IN THE COUNTRY TO GAIN TWO CLUBMARK AWARDS – A VERY SAFE CLUB FOR CHILDREN
Steyning Athletic Club became the first club in Britain to gain two Clubmark awards. One is for Athletics and the other is for Triathlon. The Clubmark awards show that the club has the procedures and personnel in place to ensure that it is a safe one for children to join. That is, it has a Child Protection Officer, sufficient qualified coaches to ensure a very low ratio of coaches to children for both sports, and it has good safety and first aid procedures in place. In other words Steyning Athletic Club is a safe club for parents to leave their children, with the knowledge that they will be coached properly and properly looked after.
The race-walkers compete in many events both locally, regionally, nationally and occasionally even internationally. Steyning has produced many very talented walkers over the years, and currently holds many national trophies. Steyning Athletic Club annually hosts the renowned Schools Walks for local primary schools and the Easter Monday walking races which are open to competitors from all the surrounding villages. Younger athletes are particularly welcome. This year, 2010, there will not be walking races on Easter Monday however.
We participate in cross-country races in Sussex and further afield. Steyning runners also compete in major running events throughout the country, including some of the classic races such as the London Marathon, the Great South Run and the South Downs Relay.
Steyning Athletic club is a member of the West Sussex Fun Run League, the aim of which is to promote running for fun and fitness. Each club in the league hosts one race per year. Steyning organizes the Round Hill Romp each July, a challenging 6-mile race which takes in Mouse Lane, the Wiston Bostal, and part of the South Downs Way. The race regularly attracts over 400 runners. Steyning AC has won the West Sussex Fun Run League for the last four years!!
The club is affiliated to the British Triathlon Association. Steyning triathletes had a successful first season in 2000, competing in events in Worthing, Southwater and Steyning as well as venues further afield. Since then members have competed in races in many corners of the world at distances ranging from Sprint Triathlon to Ironman. A number of members have competed in European and World Championship events and we even boast a few medallists. The club holds regular swim training throughout the year and also hosts a Summer Series of multisport events for members. In the summer months we do open water swimming in Southwater Lake on Monday evenings from 6:15pm. In winter we hold turbo training sessions in our Clubhouse on Monday evenings at 7pm. Each summer we arrange a date when members can experience doing an Olympic distance triathlon as part of a CLub training evening.
TRACK AND FIELD
We compete in the Sussex Veterans Track and Field League and welcome members who want to try their hands at shorter track races ( for example 1500 meters, 4×100 relay, 2k walk ) and field events like long jump, javelin, hammer etc. The season consists of 4 meetings during the months of May to August which are usually held at Hastings, Lewes, Worthing and Eastbourne.
Club kit is available for purchase including singlets, sweatshirts and cycle tops.
