At this month’s committee meeting, Martin Hesketh has stated his intention to stand for the vacant position of SAC Hon.Secretary at the A.G.M on Wednesday 24th November 2010. I wish Martin every success in this position to take us forward to even better club and personal achievements.

I hope that all club members will support Martin as I will during the change of club officers. This could be an ideal time for members to bring new blood to the committee, become involved in the running of the club and work with Martin and the existing committee who will seek election at the A.G.M.

I have been very proud to serve SAC as Hon.Secretary and I have enjoyed my six years in office, but I have recognized that SAC needs a change in direction and leadership to ensure SAC remains the best Athletic Club in Sussex and beyond.

I have every intention to support Martin in this new and exciting time for SAC. SAC has lacked in recent years a publicity officer and social secretary, now would be an ideal time for willing members to fill these positions so that we can sell ourselves more effectively in the community.

I wish to thank everyone who has helped and supported me during my time in office.

Martin Coleman

On behalf of club members I would like to take this opportunity to thank Martin for all his work over the years. And wish him all the best for the future.

JUNIOR FUN RUN LEAGUE

First of all, well done to everyone who has competed in the Junior Fun Run League events so far. At present we are lying in 4th position in the league, but not many points behind the 2nd and 3rd teams. Hopefully many of you will be able to compete in the last few junior races this year, and maybe we can finish higher in the league! This would be fantastic in our first real season in this league!

Details of the last 4 events:- Sat. September 18th at 4.15pm – 1 mile – Henfield Leisure Centre.

Sunday 10th October at 10.45am – 2.5k at Hickstead Showground.

Sunday 17th October at 10.30am – 1 mile at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre.

Sunday 7th November at 10.15am – 1 mile at Adur Outdoor Centre, Shoreham.

All the above events cost 50p to enter if you book in advance with one of the coaches, or you can enter on the day for £1. All the results so far are displayed on our notice board.

RINGMER TRIATHLON

The Stormers were represented at the Ringmer Kids Triathlon, on a wet weekend in August, by Lois Claridge and Alice Amess. This event involved a swim, bike and run. Lois finished in 24th place in 9m 57secs and Alice was 27th in 10m 34 secs. Well done to both in difficult conditions.

SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS IS BACK!

Do you want to get a Gold certificate this year! Turn up for Sportshall events in jumping, throwing and running, at the Primary School hall on certain Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7-8pm.

Tuesdays – 14th September ; 12th October ; 16th November ; 14th December.

Thursdays – 23rd September ; 28th October ; 25th November.

TRAINING NIGHTS

On Thursdays between 7and 8 pm from 9th September, we will meet at the Primary School hall until the end of November. All Thursdays in December we will meet at the SAC clubhouse in Charlton Street. Everyone turning up will be divided into groups to do an activity with one of the coaches.

We welcome Nigel McAllister and Liz Claridge onto our coaching team following their successful completion of coaching courses. The other coaches in our team are Roger Flynn, Sue Weekes, Malcolm Geal and Sarah Warren.

PARENTAL HELPERS REQUIRED

Due to the large number of children now attending the Athletic club sessions, and to avoid having to turn away any future prospective athletes, we would be grateful if parents could volunteer to help out on a rota basis on Thursday evenings.

If you are willing to give up some time to help the youngsters, please give your name to one of the coaches when you drop off your child, and we will organise a rota system.

THANK YOU!

TRAINING CLOTHING

Please remember to come training in suitable clothing for exercising. Trainers, tracksuit, shorts and T-shirt plus gloves, hat and warmer top as the weather gets colder. It is advisable to have either a white or fluorescent top so you can be seen on the dark evenings.

We do have a number of club vests available for the children who wish to compete for the club in various events. If you would like one, please see Liz Claridge.

BEHAVIOUR

Although we want everyone to enjoy their athletics, we also need them to pay attention to what is being explained to them, and to show some respect to the coaches who have given up their precious time to train them in various athletic skills.

Give something back to your coaches by listening to and obeying instructions, then the whole group will work better together and in a safer environment.

Athletics should be hard work, interesting, self-motivating and above all – FUN!

Your coaches.

James completed the Seaford Marathon last weekend in 3:10:21 – over 16 minutes faster than the second place runner. His winning time was a new course record.

James obviously enjoys the bad weather encountered on the day, which was the cause of some runners heading off in the wrong direction.

Top performance and well done. You can’t keep a good man down.

For the Treasurer role we need someone who has some experience of book keeping to continue the work.

If you think you are able to help or know somebody who might be interested please let the committee know or use the web site contact form.

It is not necessary for the Treasurer to be an existing Club member.

In past years the club has been well served by retired accountants who had time on their hands.

The work involves keeping control of the Clubs finances and dealing with general administration.

We would like to think that the new volunteer would be able to start within the next few weeks so that there can be a reasonable change over period.

Here is a Job Description the Treasurer positions (which in the past has included Membership Secretary as well).

The Secretary position has been well served by Martin Coleman for the last 6 years, for which we are all very grateful. If anyone is interest in this role we suggest they contact Martin to find out exactly what is involved.

We had a brilliant time in Athlone in central Ireland at the beginning of July competing in the European Triathlon Championships as part of the GB age group team. The Sprint race was on Saturday 3rd July and we had Elaine and George taking part. On Sunday 4th it was the Standard distance race and Adrian, Moyra and Joan all competed.

Where to begin? Athlone was a beautiful venue for the race and the hospitality and friendliness we encountered were second to none. The race was based in the town centre with the Army Barracks as the main focus for the event with transition set up in the middle of the parade ground. Security was tight as you can imagine and the bikes were guarded by soldiers with guns! The swim was in the River Shannon (the longest river in Ireland for those who don’t know that), the bike course was an out and back course on fabulous wide closed roads, and the run was a multi-lap technical course right in the heart of the town which made for great party atmosphere and support from the crowds. The only thing which didn’t work in our favour was the weather. We had all come from the hot and dry conditions in South East England and it was like stepping into a whole different climatic zone. On Saturday it was wet and windy, and on Sunday it was wetter and windier!! In fact it was so windy that they banned disc wheels on race morning so loads of athletes were scrabbling around trying to borrow wheels at the last minute.

Medals!! Elaine won a gold medal in the F60-64 Sprint distance race on Saturday and George was pleased to finish 9th in his age group (M65-69). He competed with a heavily strapped knee as he has had real problems with it recently and was delighted to finish in one piece! On Sunday, Joan won a bronze medal in the W50-54 age group (only one second behind the silver medal position!), Moyra was 5th in W40-44, and Adrian was 8th in M55-59. The full results can be seen here. I can’t begin to describe the conditions adequately. The wind was so strong that the banners all blew off the barriers in the town, slates blew off the roof of Athlone Castle (causing the re-routing of the elite men’s race in the afternoon), and the bike course was slow on the outward route (headwind all the way for 12.5 miles) then truly amazing on the return to town (30mph on the flat sometimes!!!) But we all survived, and struggled round the 4-lap hilly run course in Athlone town centre. Such an atmosphere, despite the weather, and we were all really boosted by the crowds and support shown by all the spectators.

Memories: It was a brilliant event, and we have loads of tales to tell. The Guinness was better than I remembered, the town was colourful and friendly and beautiful, the sun shone occasionally and the rain was a reminder of what weather CAN be like. The GB team spirit was great but the most amazing thing was the welcome that all the competitors had from the people of Athlone. We took over their town for 4 days, disrupted the traffic, closed the roads, filled the pubs and restaurants, clogged the streets, and everyone was happy to be part of it. The elite races were a pleasure to watch also and the sight of young Alistair Brownlee winning in such good style was something we’ll all remember.

Roll on next year’s Europeans in Pontevedra in Spain on the last weekend in June. If you want to qualify and haven’t already done a qualifying race, the last qualifier is Bala Triathlon on the weekend of 12/13 September. We already have a few SAC members in the team for next year – please consider having a go at joining us and enter Bala now!! Ask Joan or Adrian for details.

Here are the results for the RBR last Sunday.

It was a battle on the first run between Moyra and Camilla to see who could get to the bike first, with the rest of us being left in the dust.

It was not till late on the 2nd lap of the bike that Jon(drafting) Brook and myself caught Camilla then another 300m up the road Moyra , both having good bike legs.

Moyra’s plan of getting enough lead on the bike to hold off Camilla on the 2nd run worked but she did not need the extra lead as her lap times where faster by a few seconds.

Again I was just holding on watching Mrs Amess pulling further away with each stride.

Thank you to all the time keepers for a good and full set or results.
